We may expect infants born preterm, both moderate and late (32-37 weeks gestation), to have increased risks as newborns. It is important to remember that these infants also have a higher risk for developmental delays, learning challenges, behavioral issues, and executive functioning difficulties that may not show up until the preschool and early school years. Routine developmental screening with a standard screening tool like the Ages and Stages Questionnaire can ensure early intervention and access to help if a concern arises, either from a parent or provider.
